UFC 196: Betting Odds and Predictions

Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz may not be the superfight we had been anticipating, but it’s absolutely one of the very exciting matchups we might have hoped to watch as MMA lovers. UFC 196 will not just include McGregor vs Diaz, it will also see Holly Holm put her bantamweight title at stake for the first time when she chooses on Miesha Tate.
Conor McGregor (-400) vs Nate Diaz (+300)
We’ve got the featherweight champion taking on the ranked lightweight in a welterweight fight. Yeah, this fight will be a bit odd.
McGregor makes his first appearance from the Octagon since dusting Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to win the featherweight title. Since joining the UFC back in 2013, McGregor is 7-0 with six of those victories coming through stoppage.
Much was made of McGregor’s striking style and the devastating knockout power the Irishman possesses. His standup game is based within a vertical posture that enables McGregor to throw his kicks without exerting surplus time or energy. He’s become an expert in using his teammates to make the space he can use to start his arsenal of attacks. The swiftness and brutality of those attacks are unparalleled in MMA today.
The biggest question mark in this fight is size. McGregor is fighting at 170 lbs for the first time in his career; a leap of 25 pounds compared to his last struggle, and will be in a reach disadvantage for the very first time inside the UFC. ‘The Notorious One’ always held a distinct advantage in size in the lower weight classes, but Nate is about four inches taller and includes a two-inch achieve advantage.
Diaz possesses a fighting style that’s uniquely suited to him and his brother Nick. He is a volume boxer first and foremost on his feet, meaning that he throws punches in bunches and enjoys to be aggressive. The Stockton-native is good at maintaining his distance, quickly moving into throw a flurry and then return to distance. Diaz pairs his remarkable skills using a phenomenal ground game that has led to 11 of his 18 career wins coming via submission.
Despite his powerful ground game, Diaz is not able to genuinely use it thanks to a poor wrestling match. It seems that Diaz will often try to taunt his opponents into a position where they go to the takedown and he can perform his job. Although his striking game is solid, it’s far from perfect since it entails a very simple attack with couple of unpredictable components.
Can Diaz submit McGregor? Yes. Will he get the chance to? Not likely.
This is expected to become a standup affair and though Diaz is a capable striker, he does not have the same level of abilities that McGregor does. Conor has great movement skills, which should help him overcome his attain disadvantage and pick up the win in this one.
